Mr. Jacques Mazuru is a modern agro-pastoralist, seed multiplier and agricultural facilitator from Kayogoro commune in Makamba province. During the parliamentary vacations of July 2021, he was visited by the Right Honorable Speaker of the National Assembly.
Mr. Jacques Mazuru, who is also a dedicated religious person, carries out his agro-pastoral activities in the Rusovu and Kiyange villages of the Kayogoro and Kibago communes where he owns a 60-hectare property of which he currently farms only 30 hectares. He uses modern selected seeds from ISABU such as national and/or exotic composites including hybrids. Thus, crops such as rice, maize, beans, cocoyams, oil palms and cassava grow abundantly in his fields, as the Right Honorable Gelase Daniel Ndabirabe observed. He also raises cattle, pigs, goats and chickens....
The output is very impressive for this self-made man who, through courage and determination, is currently reaching a considerable achievement. This is also due to the invaluable contribution of the Provincial Office of Agriculture and Livestock (BPAE) and the technical assistance of the agricultural monitors who are constantly at his side. For instance, 85 kilos of hybrid corn seeds generate a yield of 6.8 tons. Moreover, having confidence in his acquired experience, Mr. Jacques Mazuru teaches his neighbors. Nevertheless, he is confronted with certain challenges, notably the lack of equipment. Thus, a tractor would help him to exploit the whole extent of his property.
On the other hand, the Right Honorable Speaker of the National Assembly also visited the agro-pastoralist Venant Ndikuriyo from Muzye zone, Giharo commune in Rutana province who is mainly engaged in the mini-processing of palm oil through his small rudimentary processing unit. With a workforce of more than 80 people decentralized in different activities, he cultivates oil palm on a property of 30 hectares and practices a modern breeding of pigs and ducks, which qualifies him as an exemplary agro-pastoralist in that area.
Moreover, his processing unit has been adapted from his innate knowledge. In addition, in the vicinity of this small factory, there is a public tap that he has made available to the surrounding population.
Delighted by all those initiatives, the Right Honorable did not cease to encourage them since they internalized the vision of the Government which promotes agriculture and livestock as pillars of sustainable development of the country. All these innovations also demonstrate the awakening of Burundian consciences as predicted by the Supreme Guide of Patriotism His Excellency President Pierre Nkurunziza. In order to have access to capital that will allow the emancipation of their projects, the Right Honorable Gelase Daniel Ndabirabe urged them to register their properties and subscribe to agricultural insurance.
The population was excited to see such an important authority at their side, which prompted some of them to offer him various gifts including a cow ready to calve as a token of appreciation.
