As part of the activities organized by the National Assembly during the period of parliamentary recess, a team of MPs led by the Right Honorable Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament visited on Saturday July 3, 2021, the mineral fertilizer manufacturing plant FOMI, "Fertilisants Organo-Minéraux Industries". This factory located in Maramvya zone, Mutimbuzi commune, Bujumbura province, was initiated by the businessman Mr. Adrien Ntigacika.
This is the first fertilizer production plant in the sub-region. The objective is to contribute to the availability of agricultural inputs for the Burundian population since more than 85% relies on agriculture and livestock. Thus, more than 50% of the foreign currency that was used to import chemical fertilizers from outside the country has been reduced, and the cost of fertilizers has also been lowered, to the great benefit of Burundian farmers.

Since its establishment in 2019 until now, the FOMI plant has gone from a daily production of 200 to 500 tons. This is the result of the expansion of this plant in 2020. FOMI also contributes enormously to the creation of jobs as it has a workforce of over 3500 people.
FOMI is also interested in researching the quality of Burundian soils in order to produce quality mineral fertilizers adapted to different types of soil in the country. Currently, it produces FOMI Bagara, FOMI Totahaza, FOMI Imbura fertilizers as well as lime to reduce the soil acidity.

The General Manager of FOMI praised the support of the National Assembly to investors, through the adoption of laws that facilitate investment in Burundi, especially for those who want to establish industries in the field of agriculture and livestock.
As for the Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, the fertilizers produced by FOMI are of very good quality, no imperfections have been noted by the Ministry and they are very much appreciated by Burundian farmers and even those of neighboring countries. He also indicated that FOMI is collaborating with ISABU in research on the quality of Burundian soils.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, the Right Honorable Gelase Daniel Ndabirabe, congratulated and encouraged the businessman Mr. Adrien Ntigacika, the initiator of that idea which he described as saving Burundian people who depend mostly on agriculture and livestock. This shows that he understood the vision of the National Development Plan and the Government policy to develop the country through agriculture and livestock.

The Right Honorable Gelase Daniel Ndabirabe called on other businessmen to invest in this sector but also FOMI officials to train young people who will inherit these good ideas that will lead Burundi to sustainable development.
In order to thank him for his support, the managers of this FOMI factory offered to the Right Honorable Speaker of the National Assembly 10 tons of FOMI Imbura, 10 tons of FOMI Bagara, 5 tons of FOMI Totahaza and 5 tons of lime.
